My 10 tabs took up 725 MB of RAM on Chrome, while they demanded 2.6 GB on Firefox and 3.1 GB on Edge. Matters didn't change much when I increased the stress on the browsers. However, if you simply want the file to download and automatically open the application, see the answer by Tekla. After downloading, you'll click the up arrow / caret (^) next to the download on the status bar, and choose 'Always open files of this type'. This will cause Chrome to pass the download over to the associated application.

- Log into Profile Manager on the server machine from a web browser
- Navigate to Devices > Settings, choose the device group for which to define Chrome policies.
- Click Edit.
- Go to Custom Settings and add a Preference Domain with domain 'com.google.Chrome'
- Upload a pre-configured plist file or manually add items by key and value. A full list and description of policies can be found at https://www.chromium.org/administrators/policy-list-3.
- Click Ok and payload will be created and synced to the selected devices.

- If you’ve opened chrome since you’re going to need a backup of your old files (I’ve retrieved this from an Apple Time Machine, or simply the old mac profile /Library folder) For the from backup route, navigate to the following folders in your backup.

- Uninstall any unwanted app on Mac and delete the associated files on Mac. Clean up Chrome data, like search history, downloads, cookies and all related files thoroughly. Remove all junk files on Mac, including invisible or inaccessible files. Reduce Mac clutter by deleting old versions of apps.
